Enquadramento

In the last few years, there has been a rapid proliferation of a wide range of real-time video services and applications. Incidentally, the adoption of the 5th generation of wireless systems (5G) will allow this growth to be even greater due to its high bandwidth capacity and low latency. However, even with these improvements on the wireless technologies, a reliable and high-quality video transmission still impose several challenges, such as how to handle a large number of heterogeneous devices and meet distinct user’s requirements.

Objetivo

This thesis will resort to Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and Unequal Error Protection (UEP) to provide a scalable and dependable architecture within 5G networks. The MEC paradigm enables to add cloud-computing capabilities to the edge of the network thus migrating the services closer to the end-users. The advantages are manifold; it reduces the core network traffic and allows a rapid deployment of new applications as well as a reduction of the latency. On the other hand, the UEP allows protecting in a tailored way only the most important video segments. This means that only the frames that have a higher impact on the Quality of Experience (QoE) for end-users are going to be shielded. In the light of the aforementioned facts, the master's thesis work will consist of developing and assess mechanisms to secure video transmissions taking advantage of edge computing and error correction schemes.
