Enquadramento

"Into a day break miraculously clear / I rise / Bringing the gifts my ancestors gave.
I am the hope and the dream of the slave. / And so I rise / I rise / I rise.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” a poem by Maya Angelou

“The mind is a terrible thing to taste”, 4th studio album by industrial metal band Ministry

The most powerful reality engine is the human imagination.
What does imagination feed on? How does it play out?
How can we drive the imagination engine through play?
How can we take advantage of game designs to stimulate the imagination?
Can we share the imagination in interactions with others on game artefacts?
How can we build shared imagination engines in the form of games or playable artworks?

This is a Science through Art research agenda inspired by Cultural Probes (Gaver el al 2006).
It demands a sharp, insatiable, persistent, open and playful mind. Do you have one of those?

Objetivo

The main purpose is to study “play probes” as game artworks that help answer some of the questions around the main theme: How does interactive media influence imagination?
The main goal is to design/prototype one or more interactive works to be collaboratively explored on multitouch surfaces (including a 55inch table) that could help make some progress towards our research agenda: to enable the study of how people interact with and interpret play artefacts.
Along this route we will explore design research methods though modding existing Minecraft-like game platforms. We will also try to explore the dynamics of multi-device interaction between personal devices and the multitouch table, and possible porting to AR/VR platforms.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

We will adopt a radical prototyping approach to "Research through Design“, monthly time-boxed, approach, based on the following activity cycle:
A1: read on state of the art
A2: design+prototype quickly
A3: experiment more
A4: listen, observe people interact
A5: document and reflect, a lot
A6: write what you think
A7: goto A1
All these supported on cutting-edge methods in HCI/CSCW/Design

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

We will adopt a radical prototyping approach to "Research through Design", monthly time-boxed, approach, based on the following activity cycle:
A1: read onstage of the art
A2: design+prototype quickly
A3: experiment more
A4: listen, observe people interact
A5: document and reflect, a lot
A6: write what you think
A7: goto A1

Condições

Challenging lab environment, guidance and technical support, plus any materials needed that we can pay for. We aim to financially support any activities to publish/exhibit your work at relevant international events.

Observações

You must have
1. Interest in Research.
2. Undeterred availability.
3. Technical capacity to prototype.
