Enquadramento

OpenStack Cloud OS

OpenStack is a cloud operating system (Cloud OS) for building public and private clouds. It can control pools of compute, storage, and networking recourses located in large data centres. It is supported by major IT players in the world which include IBM, HP, Intel, Huawei, Red Hat, AT&T, and Ericsson.

At Huawei Research we are currently developing the next generation of reliable cloud platforms for Deutsche Telekom. The Open Telekom Cloud1 engineered by Huawei and operated by T-Systems was launched at CeBIT 2016 and delivers flexible and convenient cloud services.

Objetivo

OpenStack Reliability

Reliability is a measure of the percentage uptime of OpenStack services to customers, considering the downtime due to faults. Many cloud providers are setting a reliability level of 99.95%. This means that if you provision a VM it will be available 99.95% of the time, with a possible downtime of 21.6 minutes per month. Reliability is an important characteristic which enables platforms to adapt and recover under stress and remain functional from a customer perspective.

Enhanced Reliability for OpenStack

In this master project, we want to increase the reliability of OpenStack. Pioneers, such as Amazon, Google, and Netflix, have already developed mechanisms to improve their cloud platforms reliability (e.g., Game Day and Chaos Monkey).

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

1. Study the state of the art in OpenStack cloud OS (months 1-3)
2. Implement fault injection as a service with a REST API. (months 4)
3. Write intermediate report (month 5)

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

1. Start by supporting the faults and features offered by ChaosMonkey from Netflix and following the ideas from PayPal Aurora platform. (month 6)
2. Extend the service to orchestrate complex fault injection plans. (month 7)
3. Extend the service to test the reliability of OpenStack multi-cloud environments. (month 8)
4. Write the final thesis (months 9 and 10)

Condições

A 5 month scholarship of 745 euros for the february-june period. Please contact Prof. Filipe Araújo (filipius@uc.pt) for further details.

Observações

The work of this thesis will be part of the FCT project Data Science for Non-Programmers (reference PTDC/EEI-ESS/1189/2014). The work will be developed in cooperation with Huawei (Munich).
