This internship is part of a research initiative focused on exploring the synergies between Quantum Computing and Evolutionary Computation in two complementary directions:
• Quantum-Inspired Evolutionary Computation (QIEC): the use of principles derived from quantum mechanics, such as superposition, probabilistic collapse, or quantum gate operations, to design novel evolutionary representations and operators that enhance diversity, robustness, and exploration capabilities.
• Evolutionary Computation for Quantum Design (EC4Quantum): the application of evolutionary algorithms to the synthesis and optimization of quantum circuits and algorithms.
During the first semester, both approaches will be explored through theoretical and experimental work. The second semester will focus on the most promising direction, selected in collaboration with the supervisors and based on the student’s interests and preliminary results.
Objetivo
• Review existing QIEC approaches (e.g., QEA, QIGA, QIEA) and identify limitations.
• Design and prototype new quantum-inspired representations and variation operators (e.g., rotation-based mutation, entanglement-based recombination, collapse-inspired selection).
• Investigate the integration of QIEC with Quality-Diversity (QD) algorithms such as MAP-Elites.
• Explore the use of Evolutionary Computation to generate and optimize quantum circuits and algorithms.
• Implement demonstrators for both Quantum4EC and EC4Quantum approaches.
• Evaluate proposed techniques on relevant benchmark problems.
• Contribute to the publication of scientific articles based on the results obtained.

• Literature review on Quantum-Inspired Evolutionary Computation and Evolutionary Quantum Design.
• Survey of QIEC representations and EC-based approaches to quantum synthesis.
• Prototyping of QIEC operators and EC modules for quantum design.
• Definition of test problems, experimental protocols, and evaluation metrics.
• Decision on which approach (QIEC or EC4Quantum) to develop further in the second semester.

• Full implementation of the selected framework (QIEC or EC4Quantum).
• Execution of benchmark experiments and comparative evaluation.
• Quantitative and qualitative analysis (performance, diversity, novelty).
• Iterative refinement and generalization of the proposed techniques.
• Thesis writing and preparation of scientific publications.
Condições
The internship will take place at the CMS-CISUC.
A research grant for graduates may be provided for a minimum of 3 months, renewable upon agreement. The grant will follow the FCT’s guidelines for graduate fellowships.
