Planet Farms’ Vertical Farming facilities are highly automated plants for Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA). As a growing business, there is the need to build an increasing number of these each year. Because of their complexity, designing such a facility from the ground up is a time-consuming and error-prone process. Some aspects of this design process can be automated, and optimization techniques may be used in order to help speed up the process of commissioning such facilities.

Objetivo

The goal of this project is to plan, design and implement a solution that provides business development with a proposed concept of a Vertical Farm given a set of business goals and requirements. This concept should be the result of optimization mechanisms that use domain knowledge available in the company to create constraints and define rules of how the layout must be set up in order to comply with regulations, business rules and best practices, while minimizing costs, both in terms of commissioning and operation, and maximizing operational and resource efficiency.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

Overview of the project goals, objectives, and team roles
Overview of existing literature on vertical farming, digital twinning, and optimization techniques
Develop a detailed project plan outlining tasks, milestones, and deadlines
Gather domain knowledge requirements with experts and stakeholders from each domain
Integrate initial data on environmental conditions, crop-specific requirements, and facility parameters
Define layout constraints based on domain knowledge and regulations
Iterate on the optimization algorithms based on initial simulation results
Evaluate and refine algorithms to enhance efficiency and address challenges
Prepare for the intermediate presentation by documenting progress and challenges faced
Present the current status of the project in the intermediate presentation

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

Continue refining spatial optimization algorithms based on feedback
Integrate additional features such as energy and resource efficiency measures
Implement features to enhance scalability, accommodating potential facility expansions or new technologies.
Conduct final testing and optimization of the entire solution
Write the internship report
Present the finalized project to mentors, stakeholders, and peers, highlighting achievements and lessons learned

Condições

The student will perform the work as part of his duties as a full-time employee of the company.
