Enquadramento

Blockchain applications have been growing significantly in the last few years. Despite being more famous in the financial sector, specifically related to cryptocurrencies, they started to be tested and applied in a wide range of other fields, such as IoT, energy, healthcare, and supply chain, to name just a few [1].
Blockchain could also be used to support the management of scientific publications. It could make the reviewing process more transparent by acting as a source of trustable data, by logging submission dates, review response dates, number of review rounds, among many other indicators. Such as system would not replace existing ones, but rather add to them via an API.

Objetivo

Based on the above, this master's thesis is intended to explore blockchain technology to support the management process of scientific publications. The main objectives are as follows:
1. Evaluate the requirements of implementing a system to support the management process of scientific publications based on blockchain technology.
2. Implement a prototype of such a system including the requirements identified in the previous point, to serve as a proof-of-concept.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

The main phases for the first semester are presented as follows (may overlap):
1. Research the state-of-the-art using a systematic literature review [2,3] on: Blockchain and systems for the management of scientific publications
- Start: February 2023
- Duration: 3 months
2. Identify and evaluate relevant requirements for building a system for the management of scientific publications based on Blockchain technology
- Start: April 2023
- Duration: 1 month
3. Design of the system taking into account the requirements specified in the previous steps
- Start: May 2023
- Duration: 2 months

Results of the 1st semester:
- Literature review on Blockchain and systems for the management of scientific publications
- Architecture for the system
- Intermediate report

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

The main phases for the second semester are presented as follows:
4. Develop and test a prototype to showcase the system based on blockchain technology
- Start: September 2023
- Duration: 4 months
5. Write the scientific paper and the master thesis
- Start: October 2023
- Duration: 3 months

Results of the 2nd semester:
- System prototype
- Final report
- Scientific paper

Condições

The student will be integrated into the Information Systems Group (ISG) of CISUC, Department of Informatics Engineering, University of Coimbra. A workplace and the required resources will be provided.
