Enquadramento
Mixed Reality (MR) merges real and virtual worlds, allowing the interaction between physical and digital objects in real time. While Virtual Reality creates artificial environments where users are completely immersed and Augmented Reality overlays digital information on the real world in a partially immersive experience, Mixed Reality extends the concept of the latter by enabling a deeper interaction between real and virtual worlds. In a MR environment, real and digital elements interact between them and with the user, providing a more complete experience.
In this work, a different concept of an MR environment will be created that provides an improved videoconference experience between two users – local and remote. In this scenario, the remote user will receive a real-time feed from a real environment that also provides a digital overlay and enables the interaction between the two. The real-time feed from the real world can be controlled by the remote user within certain limits imposed by the local user. The immersive degree of the experience will depend on both user’s available hardware.
Objetivo
The work to be done under this proposal has three main objectives:
- Study of the state of the art of Mixed Reality
- Analyse Mixed Reality tools
- Creation of a generic prototype as a proof of concept
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
1) Study of the state-of-the-art of Mixed Reality tools
2) Study of Mixed Reality supporting tools.
3) Design of a generic platform to support the use of Mixed Reality within a videoconference
Work results of the semester:
• Initial design of a generic platform to support Mixed Reality within a videoconference.
• Intermediate report.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2
4) Development of a working prototype of a generic videoconferencing tool that supports Mixed Reality.
5) Tests and validation
6) Writing of the final report
Work results of the semester:
• Prototype of a generic videoconferencing tool that supports Mixed Reality.
• Final report
Condições
This work proposal has the support of the GLN group, a company engaged in the production both of technical molds of high precision and performance, and in highly technical level plastic injection. GLN will contribute to the specification and validation of the tool to be developed.
Observações
An occasional visit to GLN, based in Leiria, may be required.
