Enquadramento

The work to be performed is integrated within the Eureka-Eurostars project OUTERMOST and aims at the development of a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) platform suited for the monitoring and control of industrial processes within the context of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

Objetivo

The master's thesis work will consist in developing a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) platform suited for the monitoring and control of industrial processes within the context of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The main challenge to be addressed pertains the collection and timely distribution of information from a large set of heterogeneous devices. In addition, energy consumption should also be considered. This context requires a dynamic control of the industrial communication system through the use of mechanisms such as aggregation and sleep scheduling in association with group management. The work to be carried out in this thesis should result on a prototype of a M2M platform for industrial systems that is able to support, in an energy-efficient way, the requests of multiple applications with specific requirements in terms of response time. Furthermore, a thorough performance evaluation of the M2M platform and communication system should be performed.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

Phase 1 – Study of the state-of-the-art on M2M communications and platforms (Week 1 – Week 4)

Phase 2 – Configuration of the M2M platform (Week 5 – Week 6)

Phase 3 – Performance assessment of the M2M platform (Week 7 – Week 12)

Phase 4 – Specification of the mechanisms for energy-efficient and low response time communications (Week 10 – Week 14)

Phase 5 - Writing of first semester report (Week 12 – Week 18)

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

Phase 6 – Implementation of the basic mechanisms for energy-efficient and low response time communications (Week 1 – Week 6)

Phase 7 – Evaluation of the mechanisms for energy-efficient and low response time communications (Week 6 – Week 8)

Phase 8 – Specification and implementation of enhancements to the M2M platform (Week 8 – Week 12)

Phase 9 – Evaluation of enhancements to the M2M platform (Week 10 – Week 14)

Phase 10 – Scientific paper writing (Week 6 – Week 14)

Phase 11 – Writing of final report (Week 10 – Week 18)

Condições

A research scholarship will be provided.

Observações

The ability to work autonomously, as well as the enthusiasm to pursue research activities are considered decisive factors for this project. Moreover, it is expected for the selected student to be able to work as part of a team, within the context of a project involving both industrial and academic partners.
