Enquadramento

Virtualisation is at the core of Cloud Computing and therefore its performances are crucial to be able to deliver a top-of-the-class service. Not only performances on their own are important, but also being able to provide the most adequate virtualised environment based on the type of workload and user requirements could be a key differentiator for cloud providers.

Objetivo

The objective of this proposal is to design a testing framework for the evaluation of performances of different virtualisation techniques, e.g. KVM, SmartOS, Xen, VMware.

The evaluation of performances should be carried out under different workloads that reflect real-life application workloads. Typical applications that should be considered are:
• CPU intensive application, e.g. video conversion.
• Memory intensive application, e.g. image compression.
• Unpredictable/Mixed application.

In the first semester, the applicant will study the basic concepts of virtualisation techniques and performance analysis. At the end of the semester a design proposal of the testing framework that will be used to evaluate the different virtualisation techniques is expected. The proposed testing framework must take into consideration different types of workloads that reflect the characteristics of real-life workloads.

During the second semester, the student will implement the proposed testing framework and evaluate the performances of virtualisation techniques. Validation of the proposed testing framework is also expected, along with the writing of the final report.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

• Study of state-of-the-art in virtualisation techniques (W1-W5)
• Analysis of performance analysis methods and tools (W4-W5)
• Identification of CPU/memory intensive applications and typical workloads (W6-W9)
• Design of a testing framework for virtualisation performances (W10-W13)
• Writing a paper with the state-of-the-art and proposed testing framework (W11-W14)
• Writing of intermediate report (W1-W15)

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

• Implementation of proposed testing framework (W1-W8)
• Evaluation of performances of virtualisation techniques through the proposed testing framework (W6-W10)
• Validation of proposed testing framework (W6-W11)
• Writing a paper with the results of the performances evaluation (W8-W15)
• Writing of final report (W1-W15)

Condições

The applicant will be integrated in the InIT Cloud Computing Lab (ICCLab) team and a work place will be provided. The term foreseen is 1 year (two semesters). The principal location of residence will be at the ICCLab, the student will be in Portugal for some classes and exams when there is need. The International Mobility centre will assist student in moving to Zurich.

The applicant will have access to a grant for the duration of the stay in Switzerland. This will cover accommodation and regular living costs (food, etc). The grant will also cover any work related travel.

Notes:
The dissertation will be supervised by Professor Marilia Curado (marilia@dei.uc.pt) and co-supervised by Daniele Stroppa (strp@zhaw.ch) and Thomas Michael Bohnert (bohe@zhaw.ch).

About ZHAW InIT and ICCLab
Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften (Zurich University for Applied Sciences, http://www.zhaw.ch). With just under 9000 students, 26 bachelor degree programs and 10 consecutive Master’s programs, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences is the largest multidisciplinary university of applied sciences in Switzerland. Over 20 institutes and 30 centres at ZHAW provide business and industry with customized educational and research services. The Institute of Applied Information Technology (InIT) at ZHAW currently employs more than 40 professors, lecturers and part-time lecturers in computer science and software engineering as well as scientific research assistants with computer science and software engineering background.

The InIT Cloud Computing Lab (ICCLab, http://www.cloudcomp.ch) is a research lab within the Institute of Applied Information Technology (InIT) of Zürich University of Applied Science (ZHAW). It is to the forefront of cloud research and covers large topic areas across the entire Cloud Computing technology stack and value proposition. The ICCLab adopts a comprehensive and holistic approach to science. The entire approach is based on three driving principles, namely Scientific Foundation, Strategic Impact, and Knowledge Transfer. The entire scientific work of the ICCLab is aligned and directed along these interlinked dimensions.

The ICCLab is experienced in running several national projects and is participating in international Projects including several EU projects (e.g. FP7 IP Mobile Cloud Networking, FI-PPP FIWare).

The persons involved from ZHAW have successfully lead and participated in various relevant projects in FP6 and FP7, like WEIRD, GEYSERS, DBE, iClass, PERSIST, SLA@SOI, and most importantly FI-WARE. Relevant scientific experiences have been demonstrated via contributions to numerous national, international conferences, bi-lateral industry projects, technology transfers to SMEs, plus coordination actions.
