Digital Twin Machine production visualization

Enquadramento

The Industrial Internet of Thing (IIoT) space has a plethora of solutions and sensors, but not many in terms of manufacturing planning, machine productive worthiness and overall factory plant status. Outside of simple production metrics (produced parts/cycles, good parts/yield, etc) and a few process failure alarms, the visualization techniques for factories are very far removed from the actual physical ocurrences in the system and thus, require a trained, abstract knowledge to relate these metrics and dashboards to actual failed machines and their respective location and impact in the factory plant.
There are some tools that try to map the productive process, tracking the sequence through production but suffer from a series of problems, of which we highlight:
- Pre-programmed, static 3d visualizations that take a custom development every time a new machine is added
- Underlying technologies that focus more on compiling and replying data instead of runtime rendering
- Non-Web or mobile friend visualization
- 2D or non-zoomable 3D models that don't make them easily understandable or translatable to actual insight.
With the advent of digital twins, which highly increase the simulation and diagnosis capabilities, it has become even more relevant to produce visualization techniques that are more ubiquitous, immediately rendered and customizable in useful time.
In this sense it is necessary to explore the most recently available technologies (such as, e.g. WebGL, Canvas, etc) to produce insights that are immediately obvious and more easily translatable to the real world surrounding today's factory workers

Objetivo

* Develop a web-centric visualization technology for Factory plants
* Develop building blocks for the visualization, machines, sensors, products, raw materials and operators (people)
* Assess web visualization techniques WebGL, Canvas, SVG animations, etc and the potential for runtime re-configuration
* Create basic color-coding solutions (overlay, etc) for attention/problem areas in the factory plant

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

Phase 1: Sate of the Art of Web friendly visualization (3 weeks)
Phase 2: Study of the shortlist of technologies, tools and procedures to use (3 weeks)
Phase 3: Prototype development for a simplified factory with basic building blocks 1 machine, 1 sensor and 1 product (12 weeks)
Phase 3 shall follow and Agile Development process, in particular those more closely related with XP canon. It will be iterative and the Developer-User conversations shall be tracked in JIRA.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

Phase 4: Eliciting of requirements and the top 3 User Journeys for development (2 weeks)
Phase 5: Development of the Visualization System with more building blocks, color-coding for problem/attention areas building blocks, and customization interface. In this development, the ability to relay live data to the Visualization System will also be fully developed. (15 weeks)
Phase 5 shall follow and Agile Development process, in particular those more closely related with XP canon. It will be iterative and the Developer-User conversations shall be tracked in JIRA.
Phase 6: Final testing and real-scenario demonstration (2 weeks)
Phase 7: Report Consolidation and Critical Analysis (the report will actually start development in parallel with Phase 4 and 5)
