Visual music – interactive multimedia artefact

Enquadramento
Throughout the twentieth century many artists, animators and film makers attempted to create visual time based films to exploit the capacity of moving images to accompany and interpret musical compositions. These experiments expanded technical boundaries in the mediums of film and video and produced several significant works in the history of the moving image. Contemporary artists and designers now have the opportunity to use digital media to add the element of interaction to this story. AV performers may add their own live input to create sounds and images in simultaneity, while installation and application designers may find ways for audiences or individuals to create visual music of their own. The aim of this proposal is for the student to produce a multimedia artefact that continues this line of enquiry.
Objetivo
The student will produce an application and/or installation that allows users to create or perform visual music compositions. Meaning that both music and motion should be created through the interaction. (Note that the aim is not to create a music visualizer, which generates images based on audio input). The project should creatively explore the visual images that sounds may suggest and vice versa.
