Enquadramento
Drawing and illustration are fundamental to visual communication generally and to many creative and technical fields. While the value of traditional drawing techniques should not be overlooked both as a tool for analysis and a means of expression or communication, there is much potential for generative design and creative coding to enrich and contribute to this area. The aim of the project is to exploit the rich possibilities of language to influence the form and appearance of drawings and illustrations. Using a digital fiction book format, textual linguistic contributions by the reader will influence the visual appearance of the images in the book and within a branching narrative structure, influence the development of the story.
Objetivo
The objective of the project is to develop a digital fiction book that allows the reader to influence and contribute to the story. This textual input will generate and/or influence the appearance of illustrations in the book. The reader will be able to export and print a unique version of the book that incorporates these direct and generated contributions.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
1. Literature review and state of the art on digital books, gamebooks, and participative narratives. Investigation into generative images based on textual input.
2. Refinement and definition of the proposal for the way the book will function and the level of adaptation of the images.
3. Writing of the first half of the thesis and preparing the presentation of work for the intermediate defence.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2
1. Writing and branching narrative and planning of readers possible contributions.
2. Creation of the base illustrations to accompany the story.
3. Prototyping and testing of the interactive version of the book.
4. Creation of the finished multimedia artefact.
5. Finishing of the written thesis.
Condições
The student will require technical support to realise the finished digital book / application.
Observações
Proposal developed in conversation with the student (Joana Esteves) and professor Hugo Oliveira. The proposal may require further refinement to become feasible.
