Design explorations of interactive virtual environments using volumetric point cloud capture techniques

Capturing environments and moments in time has always been something humans have been interested in - from paintings to analog photography, to digital cameras. Through all of these techniques we’ve been able to capture environments. We’re now entering the era of volumetric capture, which has the potential of displaying visuals beyond the limits of traditional media.

360-degree video and photography have become popular mediums to display areas of common interest. However, these techniques lack one major aspect - a person viewing these can look in all directions, but they don’t have any sense of depth to the image. By removing this limitation through the use of point cloud depth information, we can provide an even deeper sense of presence for the viewer.

Objetivo

This project will be based on exploring the potential of volumetric point cloud capture techniques for the purpose of creating an immersive and interactive environment of sites of Cultural Heritage in the city of Coimbra.

Point cloud mapping is a different way of capturing 3D space, instead of using polygons to shape every piece of a 3D shape, depth information is used and all data is stored in small points in space. This technique is not only very accurate, but also has its own aesthetic potential.


A few points will have to be explored and looked into during this project:

1. To what degree should the point cloud data be transformed and manipulated.
2. How much data should be captured and used in order to provide a smooth and stable visual experience.
3. What kinds of dynamic audiovisual effects should be implemented in order to highlight certain aspects of a location/building/statue, i.e. colours, ambient lighting and sounds.
4. What sort of overall mood should be set to represent each location.
5. What kind of interactive features make sense that allow some user agency while still maintaining the overall aesthetics.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

Phase 1 - Learn about point cloud data capture.
Phase 2 - Study the main important aspects and highlights of locations of cultural heritage.
Phase 3 - Analyse what locations should be captured.
Phase 4 - Study and define the development process that will be used to process the captured point cloud data, all the way to the final details of the computer-generated environment.
Phase 5 - Develop an initial prototype that demonstrates the general idea of the project.

Phase 6 - Capture and process the raw point cloud data.
Phase 7 - Develop the visual part of the experience.
Phase 8 - Develop the auditory part of the experience.
Phase 9 - Develop the interactive part of the experience.
Phase 10 - Evaluate and fine-tune the audiovisual aspects of the resulting environment.
Phase 11 - Write the dissertation.
