Multimedia visual identity for a festival

Festival brand identities serve to announce a coming event, to suggest a specific curatorial approach, to summarise diverse creative projects under a single aesthetic, to communicate with a specific audience while signifying difference from competing cultural offers and must achieve these aims across all available media. In effect a festival brand identity is a complex and demanding project. This theme can be applied to the field of music, contemporary art, visual art, performing art or another area of the students choice. It may also be approached as a redesign of an existing festival, even in terms of the program. Or, it could be approached as a proposal for a new festival in a specific area of interest.

Objetivo

The objective of this project is to create a visual identity and apply it across a range of media that should include, print, motion and web. A distinctive visual identity must be produced that takes into consideration typography, colour, texture, pattern and must have a conceptual aspect. The system should be shown to function across a full range of media by using either real content from an existing festival or simulated content with a realistic level of complexity. The typographic system must be capable of dealing with technical information such as the programming of performances and locations of events and longer reading such as biographies, descriptions of artworks or performances, accompanying aticles in the programme and so on. The colour system should be planned to be coherent on screen and on printed material. The method of printing should be taken into account. In order to achieve these objectives, the research phase of the project should include the close examination of the communication materials of a series of existing festivals in the chosen thematic area.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

- Clarification of theme, choice of using an existing festival or creating a proposal for a new one.
- If the proposal is a new festival the name must be created.
- Concept of the visual identity.
- Proposal for the typographic and general visual elements for the visual identity.
- Studies for basic applications such as poster, website home page, motion ‘stings’.
- Writing of the first half of the thesis and preparing the presentation of work for the intermediate defence.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

- Finalisation of the core of the visual identity.
- Development of more complex and diverse print applications such as: programme, desdobrável, map, print advertisements, flyer etc.
- Development of website including programme.
- Production of promotional motion ‘stings’.
- Finishing of the written thesis.
