Generative Design of Playful Experiences for Multi-Sensory Stimulation

The Interaction Design area constitutes a rich field of scientific study, with many challenges and methodological open issues. The particular context of using Digital Games for Multi-Sensory Stimulation and Learning with challenged audiences has been a target of research in previous studies at CISUC.
A promising area in entertainment computing is that of using generative design algorithms to dynamically generate game content (graphics, music, etc). These techniques can potentially be used as a basis for building self-adaptive playable environments when coupled with monitoring of player behaviour. Possible application areas beyond entertainment include therapeutical uses and work with challenged participants.

Objetivo

In this project we want to couple generative design techniques for audio-visual synthesis with behavioural components for mapping movement/gesture/mobile interaction, to design and test responsive, self-adaptive, generative, playful environments for Multi-Sensory Stimulation. The end goal is to offer an engaging and pleasurable experience.
On this project we will aim at:
a) assess current state-of-the-art in content generation and movement-based interfaces;

b) design and build a workable multi-sensory stimulation environment;
c) evaluate design proposals by studying their usability and playfulness;


Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

A1. (M1-M3) State of the art research - research and document the relevant SoA, publications and software review, for the study of the problem at hand; detailed characterisation of the problem to be solved stating specific goals and requirements;
A2. (M3 - M4) Design Proposal - conceiving of a design proposal for the specific context, including playful design, visual identity, interaction models and user interface draft for the proposed solution, and mapping of assumptions and milestones for the rest of the project;
A3. (M1-M4) Paper - production of a synthesis of state of the art and conceptual design proposal for a research paper;

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

A4. (M5 - M9) Prototyping - implementation of a proof-of-concept prototype, tuning and corrections based on evaluation results;

A5. (M9) Evaluation - definition of evaluation criteria and method; performing evaluations and analysis of results;

A6. (M10 - M11) Dissertation - Dissertation with reflection on process and knowledge production
