Enquadramento

S4 is the European Research Group on Spatial Simulation for Social Sciences, a project funded by the French ‘Centre national de la recherche scientifique’, a national body that supports scientific research in France.
S4 is a research group of research groups: it aggregates a series of European and American research groups and companies that deal with geography and urban studies in general, with a strong focus on complexity, geocomputation, and spatial simulation, among many other different areas.
S4 is complex in its own nature. It is complex because congregates all these very different research groups and researchers, with many research interdependencies between each other. It is also complex because S4 focus on urban and spatial complexity, dealing with cutting edge theories and techniques to understand and to simulate our living habitats and environments.

The directive board of S4 decided to transpose this complexity to the group’s image, enhancing the capacity of illustrating its research through a new image and a website that can incorporate, both in a descriptive and in a visual perspective, its inherent complexity.

Objetivo

The main goal of this thesis is to produce a new image of the S4 research group making use of the group’s intrinsic complexity that derives both from its structure - a ‘parent’ research group made of different ‘child’ research groups – and from its research topics – which focus on urban and spatial complexity at all scales and levels.

This thesis will seek:
- To create a new S4 institutional image and web presence that works both as a web infrastructure and as a defining image of the research done by the ‘child’ research groups;
- The development of a common web infrastructure that allows the heterogeneous members of S4 to share their contributions to the research group in such a way that the complexity of both the research groups and of the research topics emerges as a brand image.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

Step 1 - Revision of the Bibliography.
Step 2 - Understanding the organization of S4, its thematic areas, ‘child’ groups, and other relevant features
Step 3 - Determining the techniques to use and to develop
Step 4 - Proof of concept and prototype development
Step 5 - Thesis and work plan proposal

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

Step 6 - Implementation and deployment of the new image and web infrastructure.
Step 7 - Exploration of new visual tools to illustrate relevant datasets from the research.
Step 8 - Elaboration of management and user protocols.
Step 9 - Writing of the Thesis.
Step 10 - Scientific paper.

Condições

Support to the participation in a S4 conference and General Assembly to present the work.
