Enquadramento
Time perception is influenced by music listening, with factors such as musical, individual, and environmental aspects playing a role. Empirical studies have explored elements like tempo, timbre, rhythm, complexity, and familiarity. For example, faster tempi often lead to longer subjective duration estimates, while artificial timbres can slow perceived time. However, much remains unclear about how these factors interact and under what musical conditions their effects are maximized. Some composers have intentionally explored music’s temporal dimension to evoke distortions or illusions, and this potential is now amplified by digital composition and empirical insights into how the brain processes time. Computational approaches can even generate music that adapts in real time to the listener’s internal rhythms, such as heart rate. These strategies could offer new ways of experiencing music while enhancing our understanding of how internal and external rhythms shape our perceptions of time.
Objetivo
The main objective of this project is to compose music with a focus on the temporal experience it may evoke. The student may choose either to compose music that applies knowledge from existing evidence on musical and time perception, or follow a more interactive approach, creating a musical composition system that reacts to the listener’s physiological data.
