The iTEAM project involves the design of an Urban Modeling and Simulation platform. To achieve realistic predictions, it is fundamental to make systematic data collection using several technologies: smartphones, home sensors, web surveys and static data (e.g. from INE).

At the present moment, the project already has advances in each of these technologies, however they are being developed separately (but in coordination).

The MIT Media Lab (Human Dynamics group) is developing the Friends and Family (FunF) platform, which intends to integrate sensing data on a real time basis.

The role of the student in this project is to integrate the several survey initiatives of iTEAM in the FunF platform. The work will consist mostly in System Integration.

Objetivo

The goal of the project is to install (possibly locally) a FunF server and database. It also provides an API for sending/receiving data. Therefore, the role of the student is (besides the installation and configuration) to adapt each technology to communicate with the platform and eventually improve and take advantage of these connections (e.g. sharing data between smartphones and web survey can help train the learning algorithm of the smartphone application).

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

The tentative plan for this project (semester 1) is the following:
- October 15th – State of the art (1.5 months)
- October 31st - Understanding previous work in the lab + FunF (2 months)
- November 30th - Installation of FunF and validation with a simple sensing methodology(1 month)
- December 15th – Integration of Web Survey (1 month)
- January 15th - Integration of Smartphones side (2 months)
- February 27th - Intermediate report. Plan for new developments on the system of the following semester. Possible topics include external sensing data (e.g. from CityMotion), New resources, Further experimentation. (1 month)

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

The tentative plan for this project (semester 2) is the following:
- April 30th - Integration of Telemetry data (2 months)
- May 31th - Experimentation. Paper submission. (1 month)
- June 30th - MSc thesis delivery. (1 month)

Condições

Strong skills in programming, System Integration.

Will to communicate in English with other researchers is also important.

Other interesting skills include Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Ubiquitous Computing
