Enquadramento
Almost since the Internet inception,
passive and active global network measurements had received researchers’
attention. As the global network importance grows, ISPs and other public (e.g.,
CAIDA) and private (e.g., ATLAS) initiatives join the effort. Better understand
the Internet, its usage patterns and evolution, detecting and diagnosing
problems, monitoring performance, create accurate models and facilitate
“what-if” analysis are among the main goals behind these initiatives. By far
the procedures and metrics had focused mainly on the IP network layer. The few
exceptions that cover the transport and upper layers attempt to identify
transport protocol limitations, network neutrality behaviors or simply characterize
traffic distribution according to the application spectrum. The user perception
behind the Internet traffic performance has been mainly overlooked on these
studies. Such concern, often called Quality of Experience (QoE), had recently
come to the network limelight.
Objetivo
The main goal of the work being proposed is to develop or extend an existent open-source measurement platform (e.g. PalnetLab) to simplify global measurement activities of Internet services from the user perspectives. The platform consists of several measurement nodes, hopeful deployed across hundreds of vantage points around the Internet. Multi-researcher support, scalability, dynamic structure, distributed resource reservation (of CPU, bandwidth, storage, …), monitoring probe dissemination, deployment, management and coordination, synchronization and data collection services are among the features to consider. As a proof-of-concept of the framework developed, it must be rolled out two measurement experiments: one devoted to survey client redirection mechanisms employed by the most popular Internet Services, the other focused on the analyzes of the Google Gmail service performance.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
The tasks to be performed during this work
are described next. The student is expected to produce a report at the end of
each phase with the description of the output of the task performed.
First
semester tasks:
Phase 1: Survey, test, characterize and evaluate
existent Internet measurement platforms (16/10/2010 – 30/11/2010).
Phase 2: Identify generic and specific
requirements for active measurement of Internet services. (01/12/2010 – 07/12/2010).
Phase 3: Design the platform architecture (07/12/2010
– 31/12/2010).
Phase 4: First-semester report writing (2/01/2011
– 28/01/2011).
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2
Second
semester tasks:
Phase 5: Identify previously proposed
algorithms, protocols, design patterns and technologies that fit the platform
architecture needs (01/02/2011 – 30/02/2011).
Phase 6: Refine the platform architecture
design (07/01/2011 – 30/02/2011).
Phase 7: Develop the platform architecture (15/01/2011
– 30/04/2011).
Phase 8: Test and performance evaluation of
the platform (01/03/2011 – 15/05/2011).
Phase 9: Roll-out two measurement
experiments (15/04/2011 – 15/05/2011).
Phase 10: Final
report writing (16/05/2011 – 15/06/2011).
Condições
This work plan is aimed at students with interests in networking and distributed systems research, which like software development and are able to pursue autonomous work. Good skills on object oriented programming languages and software development methodologies are important for the success of the work plan.
