Traditionally, 3D modeling
tools such as
3DS and Maya have tough learning curves. Lately, some examples tools
have shown
a different path, focused more on simplicity of interaction and less on
complex
feature sets. This is a proposal for doing experimental work aimed at
pursuing in the direction of simplicity of use by doing a Design Research
exercise
focused on identifying a simple yet powerful set of primitives that can
render Natural
Mappings between 3D modeling in virtual space and physical modeling in
a
material world.
Objetivo
The main goal is to design, prototype and evaluate a simple tool for 3D modeling for a broad spectrum of users. For prototyping, we will choose an open source project
for an
existing 3D modeling tool, reuse the functional core and, re-work the
interface. The interaction will be redesigned by analyzing the physical
actions
of sculpting and painting on ceramic materials and supporting natural
mappings
for those actions over a virtual representation.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
A1. State of the art research - document identifying relevant SoA,
publications and software review, for the study of the problem at hand
A2. Detailed proposal drafting - detailed characterization of the
problem to be solved stating specific goals, assumptions and milestones
for the rest of the project
A3. Initial Design - identifications of quality attributes,
architectural drivers and initial design for the proposed solution,
including interaction models and user interface draft

A4. Prototyping - implementation and testing of a working prototype
A5. Evaluation - definition of evaluation criteria and method, performance and analysis
A6. Statement of Learning - production of thesis with process report and reflection on knowledge production
