Accessibility Study of Touch and Gesture Interaction with Seniors

At a time when we witness a mass introduction of new applications with touch and gesture interfaces it is relevant to question if these interfaces present a positive differential towards accessibility by Senior population and if it is possible at this time to distill specific design heuristics that would favor appropriation by Seniors.
With this proposal we intent to study the potential and limitations of touch and gesture interfaces by employing comparative studies of specific interaction design proposals, and through those design proposals validate heuristics for touch and gesture interaction designs for seniors.
Objetivo
This project follows a Design Research approach, and will aim at the design and prototyping of specific interaction design proposals, towards the following goals:
a) study the current state-of-the-art in interaction design for seniors;
b) study the current state of the art in touch and gesture technologies;
c) propose a set of heuristics for touch and gesture interaction design for seniors;
d) conceive and perform interaction design proposals for validating the proposed heuristics;
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
A1. (M1-M3) State of the art research - research and document the relevant SoA, publications and software review, for the study of the problem at hand; detailed characterization of the problem to be solved stating specific goals and requirements;
A2. (M3 - M4) Design Proposal - conceiving of the set of heuristics and interaction design proposals for their experimental validation; mapping of assumptions and milestones for the rest of the project;

A3. (M5 - M9) Prototyping - implementation and testing of specific design proposals for experimental validation of touch and gesture design heuristics;
A5. (M9) Evaluation - definition of evaluation criteria and method, perform evaluations and analysis of results towards refinement of heuristics;
A6. (M10 - M11) Statement of Learning - production of paper/thesis with process report and reflection on knowledge production
