This dissertation is set within the scope of a national research project called NextGenAI. The main goal of NextGenAI is to find solutions in the area of "responsible artificial intelligence" by establishing a strategy based on three fundamental pillars—explainability, transparency and sustainability. In concrete, the dissertation is inserted in the work package “7.3 - Unbiasing: societal bias detector/inhibitor/ compensator”, in which the student will develop a visualization tool for the analysis of bias in datasets before and after the application of unbiasing techniques.
Objetivo
The main objective of this dissertation is to develop a visualization tool that allows the exploration of different datasets and the detection of possible biases. Additionally, we aim to enable the comparison of different unbiasing techniques, facilitating their analysis and validation.
The student should develop new knowledge and skills in the development of visualization models and web programming, with an emphasis on the development of interactive models for multivariate data.
In summary, the student is expected to go through the following stages:
- Study of the state of the art and related work on the topic—data visualization and unbiasing techniques;
- Data selection, analysis, and exploration;
- Survey on the types of visualization models to be worked on;
- Application of the knowledge acquired in the previous points to develop the visualizations;
- Development of the webpage that allows users to interact with the visualizations and analyse bias.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
A1 - Review of the bibliography and State of the Art;
A2 - Characterization of the problem to be solved based on the objectives of the proposal;
A3 - Definition of the methodology, implementation strategy of the project, and web tools or frameworks to work with;
A4 - Conceptualization of the tool: (i) goal and tasks (ii) design requirements (iii) basic functionalities;
A5 - Preparation of the dissertation proposal.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2
A6 - Prototyping (development of the prototype and interaction solutions according to the research plan of the proposal);
A7 - Testing and refinement of the tool;
A8 - Writing of the dissertation.
Condições
The dissertation will be conducted at the CMS group facilities of CISUC.
This is a dissertation in the field of information visualization that integrates both a technological component and visual communication. The student should have knowledge in the areas of information visualization and web programming.
