With the increase of smart farming in the agricultural sector, farmers are likely to have better control over the pest monitoring in the crop fields. The excessive use of pesticides leads to great damage to crops and also to unnecessary manpower usage in pest monitoring.
In this internship the goal is to develop a framework that combines Machine Learning and Internet of Things to improve pest management and control. Using se low-cost cameras at the edge, that capture images of pest traps and send them to the cloud this work will use deep learning, e.g., R-CNN and YOLO deep models to detect pests in the wild, e.g., in branches, leaves, etc.
Objetivo
To achieve the above defined goal, the following objectives will be pursued:
- Study the state of the art
- Study the available IoT and Machine Learning architectures
- Define, implement, and test the framework

- Identification and study of available technological approaches
- Define the architecture of the framework
- Start implementing the proposed framework
- Write intermediate report

Condições
This work should take place in the context of a research project funded by FCT in a CISUC lab. There is the possibility of a 6-month scholarship of 798 euros per month.
