Enquadramento

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have rapidly emerged as valuable tools across various sectors, offering potential for innovation and efficiency. Healthcare is an example where UAVs transcend traditional boundaries of health services. The utilization of UAVs in emergency healthcare has evolved significantly in recent years. These aerial vehicles have become essential for increasing survival rates and enhancing healthcare services. Some applications of UAVs include the delivery of medical supplies, search and rescue operations, telemedicine, AED delivery, blood product delivery, vaccine delivery, and laboratory sample delivery. As UAVs become more common across various industries, it is crucial to understand how to adopt them effectively, efficiently, safely, and easily, particularly in healthcare and emergency services.

Objetivo

This proposed internship aims to contribute to the design and development of a graphical user interface (GUI) for controlling and monitoring drone operations in the healthcare domain. The system should be able to connect to UAVs, support a set of predefined missions based on source and destination, upload and initiate the selected mission automatically. The GUI should provide users with the following capabili-ties:
1. Choose the type of operation.
2. Define the characteristics of the payload.
3. Filter available UAVs based on the operation and payload requirements.
4. Select a UAV from the filtered options.
5. Set a default velocity for the drone and allow for velocity adjustments.
During the flight, the system should enable users to:
1. Adjust the drone's velocity.
2. Force the drone to land if necessary.
3. Monitor the operation in real-time.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

Semester 1 (Months 1-5)
Month 1: Orientation and Familiarization
• Introduction to CISUC and SSE and IS groups.
• Introduction to ongoing related projects involving drones and the team.
• Familiarization with drones, their functioning, tools, simulators, and technologies being used.
Months 2-5: State of the Art and System Design
• Define and characterize the healthcare use cases for drones.
• Define a mapping between UAV types and healthcare use cases.
• Define the requirements for the controlling and monitoring system for UAV operations in the healthcare domain.
• Design the controlling and monitoring system for UAV operations in the healthcare domain.
• Identify the required tools and technology for implementing the system.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

Semester 2 (Months 6-10)
Months 6-8: Development of the Controlling Part of the System
Month 9: Development of the Monitoring Part of the System
Month 10: Testing and Evaluation
• Test and evaluate the system in a real setup.

Write the technical report and the thesis.

Throughout both semesters, the student will engage in regular meetings with the research team, receive feedback, and participate in knowledge-sharing sessions to enhance its understanding about UAVs.

Condições

The selected student will be integrated in the Software and Systems Engineering (SSE) group of CISUC and the work will be carried out in the facilities of the Department of Informatics Engineering at the University of Coimbra (CISUC - SSE and IS Groups), where a work place and necessary computer resources will be provided.
