Enquadramento
Ubiwhere is a technology company focused on the research and development of solutions in the areas of Smart Cities and Telecommunications. Their extensive work in these fields has led to the launch of technological solutions that have significant market potential, particularly within Portuguese industries. One of Ubiwhere's main objectives is to cultivate the vision of a Nervous System for cities, enabling interconnected and intelligent urban environments.
In this dissertation, the goal is to construct a scenario that facilitates service discovery and federation of edge nodes within a distributed infrastructure, specifically for implementation in Cooperative, Connected, and Automated Mobility (CCAM) scenarios. By enabling efficient service discovery and edge federation, Ubiwhere aims to enhance the capabilities of smart city infrastructures, making them more adaptive and responsive to the needs of CCAM vehicles.
Objetivo
The primary goals of this work are:
1. Investigate and Design Solutions for Service Discovery, Edge Federation, Edge Offloading, and CCAM:
- Conduct comprehensive research on existing technologies and methodologies for service discovery and edge federation.
- Design innovative solutions that enable seamless service discovery and integration of edge nodes in a distributed infrastructure.
- Explore edge offloading techniques to optimize resource usage and improve performance in CCAM scenarios.
2. Align the Design with ETSI MEC Architectures:
- Investigate the architectures and standards proposed by ETSI Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC).
- Ensure that the design and development of solutions adhere to ETSI MEC guidelines, promoting interoperability and standardization.
- Incorporate best practices from ETSI MEC to enhance the robustness and scalability of the proposed framework.
3. Develop a Framework to Address the Proposed Scenario:
- Create a comprehensive framework that integrates the researched and designed solutions for service discovery, edge federation, and edge offloading.
- Ensure the framework is capable of supporting CCAM vehicles, providing them with efficient and reliable access to services.
- Validate the framework through simulations or prototype implementations to demonstrate its effectiveness in real-world scenarios.
The expected outcomes of this work include:
- A Thorough Investigation and Design Document: Detailed documentation of the research findings and design decisions for service discovery, edge federation, edge offloading, and CCAM.
- A Standards-Aligned Framework: A framework designed in accordance with ETSI MEC architectures, ensuring it meets industry standards and promotes interoperability.
- Validated Solutions: A set of validated solutions and prototypes that demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed framework in enhancing service discovery and federation in CCAM scenarios.
- Enhanced Smart City Capabilities: Contributions to Ubiwhere's vision of creating a Nervous System for cities, enabling more adaptive and intelligent urban environments through improved service discovery and edge federation.
By achieving these objectives, this project will significantly enhance Ubiwhere's ability to support and implement advanced smart city solutions, particularly in the realm of CCAM, thereby contributing to the overall efficiency and innovation in urban mobility.

T1 – State-of-the-Art Analysis
Conduct a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the art in edge offloading and service discovery technologies.
T2 – Framework Investigation and Development
Investigate and develop a framework for edge offloading and service discovery, ensuring it meets the identified requirements.
T3 – Framework Development in a Test Environment
Develop and implement the framework in a controlled test environment to ensure functionality and performance.
T4 – Validation and Acceptance Testing
Conduct rigorous validation and acceptance testing to ensure the solution meets all specifications and requirements.
T5 – Dissertation Writing
Document the entire process, findings, and results in the dissertation, ensuring comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the project.
