Enquadramento

MPCS project main goal is to develop a cloud-based platform easily reachable through different platforms (mobile, tablet, or laptop), that allows the Game-Based Learning and performance evaluation of marine pollution control operations and coordination.

MPCS is a tool for Game-Based Learning (GBL) that allows:
Skills development of first-responder teams and management teams under complex multiplayer scenarios, based on a discrete event simulation methodology;
Exercising scenario-based approach that aims towards individual and collective experience and improvement of operational coordination in MPC scenarios;
Performance self-assessment by participants (executed versus expected/reference);
Development of Collective Competence using state of the art virtual environments;
Response Capacity Assessment of the actors involved in an incident-based scenario;
Marine pollution control training at three levels (incidents affecting a zone, port or small-scale, large incidents affecting different zones, regional/international escalations);

The creation of realistic simulation game scenarios with replayable potential is based on a systemic digital twin approach to modeling and simulation of real world phenomena (actors, organizational structures, environments, actions and resources, etc). A multiplayer architecture is defined and implemented, featuring generated UIs for multi-device interaction, and mixed-initiative editing of generated game scenarios.

The construction of meaning and performance assessment is facilitated with realistic simulations and VR interfaces for immersive explorations. By empowering participants with an adaptable perception-action paradigm, MPCS will enable continued and more efficient collective training and self-evaluation, when compared to real world week long physical exercises.

A digital twin, game editor, simulation model, UI generation, VR operations, and multiplayer server architecture will be featured in related internship proposals.

Objetivo

The goal of this internship is to design and implement one of the interfaces needed for the simulation exercise: a virtual reality based interface for placing the oil spill containment barriers and piloting two or more boats (by two or more users) to contain and and divert the contamination area to a collection point. The interface should, thus, be multiuser, allowing the collaboration of several users. The interface should use physics simulation libraries to provide a realistic (even if not accurate) representation of the oil spill containment procedure.

The UI will need to communicate with a server for synchronisation among users, but this is not the focus of this work. Any communication solution can be applied. In this work, we intend to deal only with the specific spatial user interface and physics simulation.

The game definition, scenario editor, simulation model and multiplayer server architecture will be featured in related internship proposals.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

- Get acquainted with the MPCS project
- Study oil spill containment at sea (boats, types of barriers, type of recovery equipment)
- Study VR simulations for sea operations
- Study physics engines and other simulation approaches that could be applicable to the oil spill in the ocean situation
- Design a physics simulation proof-of-concept
- Write intermediate report

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

- Implement the proposed multi-user VR experience
- Assess the proposed UIs with user studies
- Write dissertation and scientific paper

Condições
