Enquadramento

This master thesis is framed within the scope of the ANI-Portugal 2020 POWER project (https://www.cisuc.uc.pt/en/projects/power).

The thesis will address relevant and currently trendy research topics in the field of Edge/Cloud computing continuum, data-driven technologies, and artificial intelligence, and work with a collaborative team including members from IPN, UC, and Altice Labs. The main goal is to design and develop a framework for automatic service deployment in hybrid cloud environments, mixing public and private clouds.

Hybrid cloud or multi-cloud environments refer to a mixed computing, storage, and services made up of on-premises infrastructure, private cloud services, and a public cloud, with orchestration among the various platforms.

Objetivo

The work comprises the designing and developing of a framework for the automatic deployment of services in a multi-cloud environment, configured in a controlled testbed, with zero-touch management. The framework will consist of the combination of existing management tools and the development of required mechanisms and configurations in order to achieve automatic deployment in a multi-cloud ecosystem.

Phase 1: Study of the state-of-the-art on multi-cloud environments (15/09/2022 – 30/09/2022)

Phase 2: Review existing tools for multi-cloud management (e.g., Anthos, EKS-A) (01/10/2022 – 15/10/2022)

Phase 3: Identify technological and service requirements (16/11/2022 – 30/11/2022)

Phase 4: Design the architecture for the automatic deployment framework for multi-cloud environments (01/12/2022 – 31/12/2022)

Phase 5: Configure the multi-cloud management tool (e.g., Anthos, EKS-A) in the framework (15/12/2022 - 15/01/2023)

Phase 6: Prepare midterm defence document (15/11/2022 - 15/01/2023)

Phase 7: Deploy and configure the complementing tools that compose the automatic framework for multi-cloud environments (e.g., GitHub, Istio, Kubernetes) (21/02/2023 - 21/04/2023)

Phase 8: Design and implement a simple application (based on the context of the POWER project) to be used as a proof-of-concept to evaluate the automatic deployment framework (22/04/2023 - 10/05/2023)

Phase 9: Design and implement a service-mesh based application (based on the context of the POWER project) to be used as a proof-of-concept to evaluate the automatic deployment framework (11/05/2023 - 31/05/2023)

Phase 10: Validate the framework (01/06/2023 - 15/06/2023)

Phase 11: Prepare the dissertation document (01/04/2023 - 30/06/2023)

Condições

The work will be performed in the LCT Laboratory (Departamento de Engenharia Informática, Universidade de Coimbra), in close collaboration between the research teams from other laboratories from CISUC (SSE, ECOS) and from Altice Labs.

Observações

There is the possibility to award the internship with a scholarship, according to the candidate’s profile.
