Enquadramento

This master research proposal is framed within the scope of the Orchestration and Resource optimization for rEliable and lOw-latency Services (OREOS) project.

The aim of the OREOS project is to design and implement an end-to-end orchestration solution that allows handling critical services (including vehicular communication and emergency communications) in the context of 5G networks, with the objective of improving the existing portfolio that Altran currently offers in these domains. Hence, the project seeks to address the challenges in 5G networks, including the support of Ultra Reliable and Low Latency Communications (URLLC).

Objetivo

In a Smart Environment, a set of devices in a delimited area is in charge of gathering data that is processed and analyzed by mechanisms to gain insights that allow making educated decisions. The goal is to manage assets, resources, and services efficiently. An instance of a Smart Environment is a Smart City where Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and sensors/actuators connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) are used to optimize city operations and services and connect to citizens.

The main objective of this research is to design, implement, and validate a set of mechanisms for the correlation and analysis of data collected by monitor systems deployed in Smart Environments. The mechanisms proposed must take into consideration the plethora of data sources available in Smart Environments, providing key information to the Orchestrator in charge of the management of the components that are part of the infrastructure.

The set of mechanisms implemented will be tested in the context of the automation platform used in the OREOS project. Thus, these mechanisms have to be integrated and tested within the project’s orchestration solution and validated via the use cases defined in the project (i.e., vehicle mobility, end-to-end network slicing, 3GPP and O-RAN alignment, 5G Self-Organizing Networks, and Intent Based Networking).

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

[Week 1-8] Literature review: study the state of the art on Cloud-to-IoT continuum communication infrastructures and monitoring solutions for these environments, data correlation algorithms;

[Week 9-11] Tool identification: prepare a comparative analysis among different existing monitoring solutions (e.g., Hawkular and Influx) for Generic and Smart environments;

[Week 12-13] Requirement definition: identify Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to be used in the data correlation mechanisms for the monitoring system;

[Week 14-15] Testbed definition: describe the testbed topology and infrastructure components, including methodology, metrics, and parameters;

[Week 16-20] Master proposal: write the master dissertation proposal.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

[Week 1-6] Testbed configuration/tuning: build the testbed, allowing the collection of monitoring data to be used by the data correlation mechanisms;

[Week 7-12] Design and implement mechanism: develop the different data correlation and analysis mechanisms;

[Week 13-17] Validation of the proposed mechanism: evaluate the developed mechanisms using the previously designed testbed, and the use cased defined by the OREOS project;

[Week 15-20] Master thesis: write the master dissertation.

Condições

The work will be performed in the premises of the Laboratory of Informatics and Systems of the Pedro Nunes Institute, in the case that remote work restrictions are flexibilized. This work is integrated within an international research project. The student can participate in calls for research scholarships for bachelors, for a 6 months period, eventually renewable, with the value of 835 € / month.
