Enquadramento

Mixed Reality (MR) merges real and virtual worlds, allowing the interaction between physical and digital objects in real time. While Virtual Reality creates artificial environments where users are completely immersed and Augmented Reality overlays digital information on the real world in a partially immersive experience, Mixed Reality extends the concept of the latter by enabling a deeper interaction between real and virtual worlds. In a MR environment, real and digital elements interact between them and with the user, providing a more complete experience. In this work, the inspection of 3D models between two parties connected through an MR enhanced videoconference will be explored.

The use of videoconferencing tools in business meetings has been increasing steadily in recent years, and sharply since the beginning of COVID-19, as the travel restrictions caused by the pandemic lead to record levels of growth. However, the current videoconferencing tools are not suitable to replace all meeting needs. Specifically, our use case will focus on the industry of high precision molds. In this industry, regular meetings occur between factories and clients, where each mold is discussed in detail. Initially, clients and factory discuss high level designs and discuss the technical requirements. Following meetings further discuss the mold to be created, with a higher level of detail. The prototype to be created in the scope of this thesis will feature a videoconference tool where parties can remotely discuss and visualize 3D molds, while being able to access related documentation. To aid the discussion, both parties should be able to rotate, access mold characteristics, access related documentation, change size and/or select details for detailed inspection. The immersive degree of the experience will depend on both user’s available hardware.

Objetivo

The work to be done under this proposal has three main objectives:
- Study of the state of the art of Mixed Reality and Augmented Reality
- Analyze Mixed Reality tools
- Analyze the deployment of 3D models in MR scenarios
- Creation of a generic prototype as a proof of concept

3) Design of a generic platform to support the use of 3D models in a Mixed Reality enhanced videoconference

• Initial design of a generic platform to support the visualization of 3D models within a videoconference.
• Intermediate report.

Condições

The work will be developed at CISUC.

Observações

An occasional visit to a company engaged in the production both of technical molds of high precision and performance, may be required.
