Enquadramento
Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) often arise in transportation problems where we want to send data between two nodes that are not physically connected. The data transmission can be performed using Ad-hoc Vehicular protocols where vehicles are circulating in the network and can transfer information between them so that the data reaches the destination node. A possible application is considered in the MobiWise project, where sensors (Data Collecting Units - DCUs) collect data about temperature, humidity, gas level, etc at some places in the city, which need to be transmitted to Road Side Units (RSU) with connection to Internet (end nodes). The transmission is done using mobile nodes (bicycles, buses, etc) which collect data from the sensor into a On Board Unit (OBU) and forward it to other mobile nodes or directly to an RSU. The challenge is to choose the best route to minimize the delay and ensure that some amount of data is delivered. There are several routing protocols in the literature to achieve this goal (DTN routing) and this Master’s thesis will explore some mobility models and routing algorithm for DTNs.
Objetivo
The main objective of this work is to model a simple vehicular network that can be used in the context of DTN routing. This model will be simulated for different routing strategies and the results will be analysed taking into account several parameters (amount of data that reaches the destination node, total transmission delay, etc).
