The new EU General Data Protection Regulation increased drastically the responsibility of organizations in taking care of data protection and individuals’ privacy. This requires special attention in the development of new systems, taking these concerns into account since very beginning. At the same time, the massive digitisation process in public institutions has made consulting documents a big challenge, as the information systems are not ready to provide access to the citizens while guaranteeing the privacy of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). The problem is even bigger, as the same document may contain data with different levels of PII.
Blockchain technologies are widely popular nowadays due to their usage in cryptocurrencies, but this technology can be applied in many other scenarios. One such scenario concerns access control management, which is relevant to the problem to be addressed in this work, in the context of the H2020 Poseidon project.
Objetivo
The main goal of this project is the development of solutions for access control to data under the responsibility of third parties, such as public institutions. The work will focus on the study of the application of the blockchain technology in systems which handle PII (Personally Identifiable Information). The student will study reputation management mechanisms and will select and develop the most adequate for the RMM (Risk Management Module) of the Poseidon architecture, considering the interactions with the bloachain. The proposed mechanism will be integrated and validated within the context of the Poseidon system.
