Enquadramento
When a value crisis sweeps the globe and Democracy in trouble at many political stages, from nation states to local communities, to organisational and work environment, we renew the challenge of Scandinavian democratic engagement in Participators Design processes, now reframed in the context of Transition Design challenges.
After ten years of studies of the influence and possible use of ICT to support diverse forms of governance and participatory processes, it becomes increasingly clear that there is a whole lot that can still be done to focus on the pragmatics of what makes a design process participatory.
More than a question of decision making, we aim for plural empowerment to balance the exercise of power, the ability to let multiple perspetives be expressed. We will question how to promote the concurrent identification of issues, how to create spaces for playful participation and exploration of design alternatives, how to debate perspectives and jointly draft resolutions, and finally support decision-making.
Objetivo
Proposed as Transition Design/ Service Design/User Experience exercise, we will address the question of designing a participatory online canvas to enable a set of stakeholders to engage in a Transition Design process. This will be achieved through a set of shared web canvases accessible with a web browser. This will take the form of an online web-based self-service that, with the simplicity of filling out forms or drawing on visual canvases, commenting, etc, can support issue raising, problem setting, debating and proposal of solutions in a participatory and playful manner.
Main goals and deliverables:
a) Assess current state-of-the-art in online participatory web-based solutions;
b) Design and build a workable web-based participatory transition design project canvas service, inspired on existing TD paper-based canvases,
c) Evaluate the user experience with such a medium during next iteration of TD course.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
A1. (M1-M3) State of the art research - Research and document the relevant SoA, publications and software review, for the study of the problem at hand; Detailed characterisation of the problem to be solved stating specific goals and requirements;
A2. (M3 - M5) Design Proposal - Conceiving of a design proposal for the specific context, including visual identity, interaction models and user interface draft for the proposed solution, and mapping of assumptions and milestones for the rest of the project;
A3. (M3 - M9) Prototyping - Ongoing implementation of a proof-of-concept prototype, tuning and corrections based on evaluation results;
