The work to be performed in integrated within the PT2020 project MobiWise and aims at the development of algorithms for virtual service placement in hierarchical cloud systems.
Objetivo
Network function virtualization (NFV) will play a key role in next generation cloud-based services. There are however multiple challenges to be addressed related to NFV-supported services deployment and management. One of the most important problems yet to be solved pertains to the virtual service placement which comprises the placement and chaining of the composing Virtual Network Functions (VNF). Several approaches have been presented in the literature, which aim at the optimization of the allocation of VNF considering the performance targets of the services and the costs associated with the allocation of the physical and virtual resources involved. However, there are still many open issues, since most existing approaches incur high costs, are not scalable and do not consider the interests of all involved entities. Within this context, the master's thesis work will consist in developing and evaluating algorithms for virtual service placement in hierarchical cloud systems. In addition, the virtual service placement work will be integrated into the cloud platform being developed in the MobiWise project.

Phase 4 – Specification of the enhanced mechanisms for Virtual Service Placement and preliminary implementation
Phase 5 – Writing of first semester report
