Enquadramento

The Interaction Design and Game Design areas constitute rich fields of study, with many challenges and methodological open issues. The particular context of generative digital gameplay has been a target of research in previous studies at CISUC, especially in combination with the goal of empowering game designers to promote specific flavours of gameplay. In this context we want to study the potential for employing novel procedural content generation techniques in the context of the design of an original game.
A promising area in entertainment computing is the use of generative design techniques and algorithms to dynamically generate game content (graphics models and textures, music, sound compositions, etc) and the definition of game contexts themselves (game scenarios and levels). These techniques can potentially be used as a basis for building self-adaptive playable media when coupled with monitoring and analysis of player behaviour.

Objetivo

In this project we want to couple procedural content generation techniques for audio-visual and behavioural components with a movement/gesture/touch based interface to design and prototype self-adaptive, generative game environments for multi-sensory stimulation. The end goal is to support an engaging and playful experience.
On this project we will aim at using generative design techniques in game design and prototype a playful environment, with the following goals:
a) assess current state-of-the-art in procedural content generation and mobile touch interfaces;
b) design and build a workable game prototype; 
c) evaluate user experience by studying its usability and playfulness;


Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

A1. (M1-M3) State of the art research - research and document the relevant SoA, publications and software review, for the study of the problem at hand; detailed characterisation of the problem to be solved stating specific goals and requirements; 
A2. (M3 - M4) Design Proposal - conceiving of a design proposal for the specific context, including playfulness, interaction models and user interface draft for the proposed solution, and mapping of assumptions and milestones for the rest of the project;
A3. (M1-M4) Paper - production of a synthesis of state of the art and conceptual design proposal for a research paper;

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

A4. (M5 - M9) Prototyping - implementation of a proof-of-concept prototype, tuning and corrections based on evaluation results;
A5. (M9) Evaluation - definition of evaluation criteria and method; performing evaluations and analysis of results;
A6. (M10 - M11) Dissertation - Dissertation with reflection on process and knowledge production
