In a recent project [1], we have studied the use of a Web-based Virtual Reality (VR) framework -- called A-Frame -- for the development multi-platform interactive 360º virtual tours. We identified several issues that represent added effort for Web developers. In the current project we wish to revisit those issues and propose and implement a Web-based VR programming toolkit that facilitates the work of creating interactive 360º virtual tours. Additionally, we wish to apply the resulting toolkit in creating an interactive 360º virtual tours regarding the virtual re-construction of the Monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra in the 19th century [3].

Objetivo

The objectives of this project are:
1. Identification of relevant features for Web-based 360º VR tours
2. Development of a Web-based toolkit for A-Frame for VR development 360º virtual tours.
3. Evaluation of the implemented toolkit with VR Web application developers.
4. Implementation of a VR virtual tour for the digital re-construction of the Monastery of Santa Cruz.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

1. Study 360º virtual tour development tools
2. Study A-Frame and 360º virtual tour development with A-Frame and its limitations/difficulties for Web developers
3. Run a programming workshop to identify further difficulties with the development of Web-based VR experiences.
4. Develop a prototype of the programming toolkit
5. Write intermediate report

1. Implement the programming toolkit
2. Evaluate the toolkit in a programming workshop with Web developers
3. Develop a 360º virtual tour for the digital re-construction of the Monastery of Santa Cruz.
