Enquadramento
Data Warehouses (DWs) store sensitive data that encloses many business secrets. They have become the most common data source used by analytical tools for supporting decision making in most enterprises. This makes them an extremely appealing target for both inside and outside attackers. Given these facts, securing them against data damage and information leakage is critical.
In order to guarantee that data is not accessed by others, mechanisms have to be added that are very expensive in terms of processing. Preventive data security techniques are used for protecting data in advance of attacks, such as data access policies, data masking and encryption techniques for changing original data values, and checksums for integrity checks on changed data.
In this internship, we propose and test solutions to optimize scalability and data security in Big Data Warehouses. On one hand, we need to investigate the use of a set of security techniques, such as encryption, masking, anonymity and access control.
Objetivo
In practice, the expected outcomes of this internship are:
- Develop privacy and security techniques for Big Data Warehouses.
- Provide data warehousing scalability for the cloud, while incorporating privacy and security concerns.
- Evaluate the use of secure and scalable approaches for transactional and analytical data management needs of companies.
- A research paper, to be submitted and presented at a top international conference, describing the approach and main results obtained from the experiments.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
[Some tasks might overlap; M=Month]
T1 (M1 – M3): Knowledge transfer and state of the art literature review on scalability and data security.
T2 (M3) Design Security Mechanisms for Big Data Warehouses, using the information gathered in task T1 as basis.
T3 (M3) Identification of target systems to be used in the experiments.
T4 (M3 – M4) Implementation of a proof of concept prototype.
T5 (M5): Writing the Intermediate report.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2
[Some tasks might overlap; M=Month]
T1 (M6): Integration of the intermediate defense comments and completion of the Security Mechanisms for Big Data Warehouses.
T2 (M6 – M7): Implementation of the architecture and mechanisms for scalable security in big data warehouses, and execution of tests (functional).
T3 (M8): Execution of experiments and analysis of results.
T4 (M9): Write a research paper and submission to a top international conference on the Security and Data Warehousing areas (IEEE Big Data Congress, Database Systems for Advanced Applications - DASFAA, IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering – ICDE, etc.).
T5 (M10): Writing the thesis.
Condições
The work will be carried out in the facilities of the Department of Informatics Engineering at the University of Coimbra (CISUC - Software and Systems Engineering Group), where a work place and necessary computer resources will be provided.
