Enquadramento

The employment of video-equipped vehicles is growing apace. Following the same trend is the number of available applications and services place at disposal in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET). This type of network is contemplated as the core component of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which provides support for a wide variety of applications, including video services.

Objetivo

VANET and ITS flood the wireless systems with video content on a daily basis. As a result of this sharp increase in video traffic, the prospect of errors due to network interference and congestion rises. On this account, the adoption of new technologies/paradigms such as 5G and Fog computing is advised. The 5th generation wireless systems (5G) are envisioned to support a massive number of communications in high-density networks. Additionally, Fog computing or edge computing is a method used to place cloud services at the edges of the network. This allows providing applications with context awareness as well as low latency communications. However, the mere adoption of these technologies only mitigate the video transmission issues, thus further improvements are necessary to provide end-users with the highest Quality of Experience (QoE) possible. To tackle these challenges, this master's thesis work enfolds the design and assessment of Fog-based mechanisms for smart and reliable video transmission on VANETs in order to ensure the best possible QoE for end-users while saving wireless resources.
