The LeapMotion controller is a new 3d sensing device for hand gesture interaction with a computer. It is capable of sensing the position and orientation of the fingers of both hands, as well as the palm orientation and curvature. It is meant to be placed on the desktop and operated by positioning the hands over the device. The controller can be used to point to a computer screen with a finger or with a tool (a pen or pencil, for example).

In a previous project [1] the Leap Motion has been evaluated for 2d pointing tasks on a computer screen and compared to a mouse and touchpad. The results of this evaluation showed that the Leap Motion achieves a lower performance than a mouse or touchpad.

In this project, the aim is to compare the Leap Motion with a mouse and touchpad for tracing tasks (i.e., 2d tasks where the user has to follow a pre-determined path on the screen)

Objetivo

- Study the Leap Motion device for tracing tasks and compare it to the mouse in terms of efficiency and subjective preference
- Design a new interaction technique for tracing tasks that takes into account the Leap Motion characteristics
--For example, imagining the Leap Motion would be used with a drawing software like GIMP or Photoshop, can we develop an interaction technique for precise object selection (tracing around an object) that takes advantage of the characteristics of the Leap Motion? (e.g., we could use the hand’s position - z depth - and map it to a zoom level, so that users can easily zoom in/out while tracing).
- Perform a user evaluation and gather empirical data that compares the performance of users doing tracing tasks with a mouse, and with the Leap Motion controller.
- Write a scientific paper/poster reporting the results of the evaluation

Semester 1
1. Get acquainted with previous work[1, 2, 3] and with the Leap Motion device
1.1 Study other interaction techniques for the Leap Motion device
1.2 Study tracing tasks experiments (for this project we can try to follow the experiment made by [2]
2. Design and specify the tracing interaction technique
2.1 Sketches of how the technique would work, variations, etc.
3. Design the experiment and and the necessary experiment software

Semester 2
4. Implementation of the interaction technique and testing software
4.1 (For this project the platform/programming language is not defined. It could be Java/Processing, JavaScript, C++, etc.)
5. Carry out the experiment with several users
6. Write the results as a scientific publication and dissertation
