Enquadramento

Peer reviewing is an essential way to judge the quality of research work. Peer-reviewed publications are used and referenced by many researchers to build up their own research and usually the academic advancement of many scientists are largely dependent on these peer reviews. Since the number of scientific papers is tremendously increasing, the quality of the peer-review process is considered to be one of the main factors that influences a conference or journal’s reputation or impact factor. Nevertheless, researchers are many times faced with very low quality reviews of their work, even from reviewers of high quality conferences and journals. So far, there is no central system or database of reviewers allowing access to available reviewers and no practical means to evaluate the quality of reviewers.

Objetivo

In this work, the main goal is to design and create a web application that serves as front-end to a database of reviewers. This system includes the the following core functionalities: 1) registering reviewers; 2) searching a reviewer; 3) inviting reviewers; 4) accepting or declining an invitation; 5) evaluating reviewers based on several metrics including author feedback provided in paper submission websites (e.g., EasyChair). ReviewerGate will keep the reviewers profile information, statistics regarding their reviewing activities, and their score calculated based on their current profile, authors feedback, etc. In practice, the expected outcome of this internship is:
- A web-based application, named ReviewerGate.
- A paper to be published in a related international conference.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

[Some tasks might overlap; M=Month]
T1 (M1): Knowledge transfer.
T2 (M1-M2): Requirements definition.
T3 (M3): Design of a preliminary architecture for the system.
T4 (M3-M4): Implementation of a small proof-of-concept prototype.
T5 (M5): Writing the intermediate report.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

[Some tasks might overlap; M=Month]
T6 (M6): Integration the intermediate defense comments in the work and report.
T7 (M6-M8): Implementation of the complete system.
T8 (M8): Definition and execution of tests.
T9 (M9: Writing a paper and submission to a related international conference
T10 (M10): Writing the thesis.

Condições

The selected student will be integrated in the Software and Systems Engineering (SSE) group of CISUC and the work will be carried out in the facilities of the Department of Informatics Engineering at the University of Coimbra (CISUC - Software and Systems Engineering Group), where a work place and necessary computer resources will be provided.
