Would you like to know when someone is lying?
Or when someone is scared and afraid of showing it?
Let us put this in another way… Who wouldn't like to have the capabilities of Dr. Cal Lightman from "Lie to me" series?

The emotion and micro-expression detection has been object of study for a long time, namely, on the psychology fields. Dr. Paul Ekman from UCSF (USA) is well-known for furthering our understanding of nonverbal behavior, encompassing facial expressions.

"Lie to me" series is based on his work and has caught the attention of consumers and professionals namely from the media & advertising market. He has put forth six basic emotions: Anger, Disgust, Fear, Happiness, Sadness, Surprise.

In computer science, the study of systems that can recognize, interpret and process emotions, known as Affective Computing, can enhance greatly human-machine interactions. From e-learning to e-therapy and marketing, the industrial applications for such technologies are endless!

Objetivo

The main goal of this research project is to develop a system for automatic emotion detection, analysis and recognition. This project is going to investigate emotional pattern discovery, modelling & recognition with appropriate pattern recognition techniques. The six basic emotions identified by Dr. Paul Ekman will be the basis for the pattern recognition project.

Condições

The student will be able to prove that deserves a full research scholarship on the second semester. In order to be successfully eligible for a scholarship (350€/month), the student needs to be outstanding on the first semester work plan.
Additionally, there is the possibility for a one year paid internship in the company after Master’s conclusion.

The work plan will be performed at LARN@DEI (LAboratorio de Redes Neuronais at Departamento de Engenharia Informática). On top of this, the student has the opportunity to incorporate in the company for a few weeks during the second semester.

Observações

EyeSee is a technological startup, funded by Olisipo, focusing on intelligent systems. As of today, EyeSee developed a novel digital advertising solution with unique insertion and interaction features, owning 5 patents in USPTO. Additionally, EyeSee team is working on a smart energy management product and on a smart health monitoring system.
