Enquadramento
With the CrowPlay project we built a creativity support environment for game design that explores a crowdsourcing approach. By delivering playable game designs to users, and inviting them to voluntarily contribute their gameplay metrics, we get a valuable data source for researching user responses to specific game designs and develop useful game play metrics from player behavior, enabling empirical research on game design options with respect to how they influence various qualities (e.g. rhythm, attention, engagement, challenge, learning, etc) and the impact of aesthetics of interactivity on perception and interpretation of gameplay. This framework can be of interest to UX research as well as for specific domains (e.g, game-based learning, stimulation, gamification, etc).
In this roadmap for studying how to empower game design creativity we now plan to develop test scenarios by instrumenting games to support dynamic generation of game scenarios, collect and analyse gameplay data.
Objetivo
The main goal of this project will be to develop and test a game demo, by instrumenting an existing open source game, to enable generation and distribution of game scenarios, and collecting of gameplay metrics from player interactions in specific game scenarios.
This project follows a Design Research approach based on the agile development of a prototype consisting of three main outcomes:
a) a parameterizable demo built from a pre-existing open-source game (web/smartphone/tablet) that can generate/run diverse game scenarios;
b) instrument the game demo for game play data collection of user behavior;
c) implement data visualization of specific gameplay indicators.
This will be built on top of the existing Crowdplay infrastructure for game distribution, for registering and distributing game scenarios, and for collecting user interaction logs.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
A1. (M1-M3) State of the art research in gameplay analytics - research and document the relevant SoA, publications and software review, for the study of the problem at hand;
A2. (M2 - M3) Detailed proposal - detailed characterization of the problem to be solved stating specific goals and requirements, assumptions and milestones for the rest of the project;
A3. (M3 - M4) Initial Design - Selection of open source game for instrumentation, porting and definition of an architecture for generating parameterizable game scenarios; Definition of gameplay metrics to be used.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2
A4. (M5 - M10) Prototyping - implementation and testing of a working prototype for the prioritized components; tuning or corrections based on evaluation results
;
A5. (M9) Evaluation - definition of evaluation criteria and method, performing evaluations and analysis of results
