Enquadramento

The current proposal is aligned with the research agenda of CIUSC’s Computational Design and Visualization Lab. and of the Natural Computing Research and Applications group, based in University College Dublin, who conduct active research in the fields of Evolutionary Computation, Computational Creativity and Evolutionary Art. The candidate will be partially supported by project ConCreTe – Concept Creation Technology, 7th Framework Programme – ICT.

Objetivo

The main goal of the thesis is the study, development and analysis of evolutionary systems for the creation of visual languages, i.e. sets of visual artefacts that share common features allowing one to intuitively classify them as belonging to the same family. While in traditional evolutionary art systems each genotype encodes a single artefact, e.g. an image, here each genotype indirectly encodes an entire family of shapes. Building on previous research the team will focus on the evolution of generative grammars, on assessing coherency and diversity of visual languages, on the development of semantic and structure aware operators for the evolution of generative grammars.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

Task 1 – Revision of the bibliography and survey of the state of the art.
Task 2 – Refinement of the graph based evolutionary engine for generative grammars.
Task 3 – Development of automated fitness assignment schemes.
Task 4 – Writing of intermediate report and refinement of the work plan for the second semester.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

Task 5 – Development of a grammatical evolution engine for generative grammars.
Task 6 – Development of semantic and structure aware methods for generative grammars.
Task 7 – Experimentation.
Task 8 – Dissemination: Thesis and Papers.

Condições

Strong skills in programming.
Will to communicate in English with other researchers is also important.
Other interesting skills include Complex Systems and Artificial Intelligence

Observações

A scholarship is available. This dissertation occurs in the scope of an european project FP7 ConCreTe. As such the student will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with other researchers from UC and other european institutions involved in the project.
