Enquadramento

The current proposal is aligned with the research agenda of CIUSC’s Computational Design and Visualization Lab. and of the Aston Lab for Intelligent Collectives Engineering (ALICE), who conduct active research in the fields of Evolutionary Computation, Computational Creativity and Evolutionary Art. The candidate will be partially supported by project ConCreTe – Concept Creation Technology, 7th Framework Programme – ICT.

Objetivo

Although it is theoretically possible to generate any image with most expression-based evolutionary art systems, the evolutionary art approach is typically associated with the evolution of abstract imagery. Based on previous research the team will focus on the study, development and analysis of techniques for evolving figurative images using conventional expression-based representations. This will include the development and refinement of automated fitness assignment schemes, the incorporation of semantic operators, the developments of novelty search mechanisms and the exploration of self-modifying evolutionary computation approaches in this context.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

Task 1 – Revision of the bibliography and survey of the state of the art.
Task 2 – Refinement of expression-based evolutionary engine.
Task 3 – Development of automated fitness assignment schemes.
Task 4 – Adaptation and development of semantic and structural aware operators.
Task 5 – Writing of intermediate report and refinement of the work plan for the second semester.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

Task 6 – Development of novelty search mechanisms.
Task 7 – Development of self-modifying evolutionary methods.
Task 8 – Experimentation.
Task 9 – Dissemination: Thesis and Papers.

Condições

Strong skills in programming.
Will to communicate in English with other researchers is also important.
Other interesting skills include Complex Systems and Artificial Intelligence

Observações

A scholarship is available. This dissertation occurs in the scope of an european project FP7 ConCreTe. As such the student will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with other researchers from UC and other european institutions involved in the project.
