Visualization techniques for Big Data

This proposal comes in the context of an ongoing project in visualization for Big Data with Sonae. Visualization synthesizes large quantities of data, creating forms and visual systems that present various viewpoints over a dataset. Typically visualization is used to explore unknown patterns of relations among data dimensions or confirm the existence expected patterns. Furthermore it also invests in creating effective communication devices of relevant narratives or stories about the dataset, while enabling the exploration of sub-narratives. When visually exploring patterns of very large, complex, high-density datasets (big data) without major prior data aggregations through high-level common approaches, we are usually confronted with current graphic limitations that cannot display such volume of data points at reasonable frame-rates. This limitation does not allow making the most of visual exploratory tools, undermining fluid animations and interaction.

Objetivo

This project consists in studying and applying a series of computer graphics techniques to display very large, complex, high-density data in relevant case studies. Such techniques will take better advantage of current graphics pipelines and enhance the potential of visualization for big data exploration. Implementing custom shaders will reduce the visual complexity of big data representations while delivering rich visualizations with adequate frame rates. The techniques will be integrated in applications for visual representation and exploration.

Condições

Strong skills in programming. Good familiarity with computer graphics.
