Enquadramento

Mobile Cloud Networking (MCN) is a large scale IP funded under the FP7 framework. The objective of MCN is to develop comprehensive mobile “network” architecture and technologies to transition from current mobile networks to a fully cloud based mobile communication system. The idea is to embrace the cloud principles including on-demand, elastic, pay-as-you-go in all stages of a mobile communication system. In short – MobileCloud is “Mobile Network + Decentralized Computing + Smart Storage offered as a service”. Traditionally, the mobile networks have been fully vertically integrated systems with all architectural elements being operated and controlled by the single operator. With MCN, we are trying to propose a new business model, wherein, all key components of a mobile network – RAN, EPC, IMS, etc. could be offered as a service operated by independent operators. These services could be provisioned and combined with cloud services (IaaS, PaaS) to offer novel services to application developers and end users. Since, each component of traditional mobile networks could be offered as a service, along with cloud computing services (IaaS, PaaS, etc.), there is a need to provide traditional OSS/BSS elements as a service too. It is in this framework, we aim to develop rating, charging, billing (RCB) as a service for supporting these novel service operators being targeted in MCN.

Objetivo

The objective of this proposal is to develop a generic Rating, Charging, and Billing platform that can handle any kind of service and operators requirements. The platform should be completely generic with all major functions fully configurable and parameterized.

The student is expected to understand the financial processes involved in the billing process, and design the RCB architecture in a modular, fully customizable manner. Since financial data is a prime target of malicious activities, the design must take inter-module, intra module, and data security into consideration at each stage of the architecture design.

He/She is also expected to develop a prototype based on the architecture; the implementation will have to be integrated over OpenStack IaaS cloud for demonstration (even though the architecture is generic and could support any service).

The student will need to develop a basic analytics engine, which will process OpenStack monitoring data to generate meaningful aggregates over which cloud users would be billed upon. An example of such an analytics could be processing the monitoring data to find out how much CPU time was consumed in a given session.

• Study of state-of-the-art in business models and pricing strategies of major cloud service offerings (W1-W2)
• Understanding OpenStack monitoring (W3-W8)
• Design of a generic pricing function (W6-W8)
• Design of a generic RCB architecture (W8-W12)
• Analysis of proposed architecture with competing solutions (W8-W15)
• Writing a paper with the state-of-the-art and preliminary results of the proposed mechanism. (W11-W15)
• Writing of intermediate report (W1-W15)

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

• Implementation of basic analytics engine for OpenStack (W1-W4)
• Implementation of the RCB architecture over the analytics engine (W4-W12)
• Proposal validation, assessment and comparison with state-of-the-art mechanisms (W8-W13)
• Writing of two papers with the proposed architecture compared to state-of-the-art mechanisms (W6-W15)
• Writing of final report (W1-W15)

The InIT Cloud Computing Lab (ICCLab, http://www.cloudcomp.ch) is a research lab within the Institute of Applied Information Technology (InIT) of Zürich University of Applied Science (ZHAW). It is to the forefront of cloud research and covers large topic areas across the entire Cloud Computing technology stack and value proposition. The ICCLab adopts a comprehensive and holistic approach to science. The entire approach is based on three driving principles, namely Scientific Foundation, Strategic Impact, and Knowledge Transfer. The entire scientific work of the ICCLab is aligned and directed along these interlinked dimensions.

The ICCLab is experienced in running several national projects and is participating in international Projects including several EU projects (e.g. FP7 IP Mobile Cloud Networking, FI-PPP FIWare).

The persons involved from ZHAW have successfully lead and participated in various relevant projects in FP6 and FP7, like WEIRD, GEYSERS, DBE, iClass, PERSIST, SLA@SOI, and most importantly FI-WARE. Relevant scientific experiences have been demonstrated via contributions to numerous national, international conferences, bi-lateral industry projects, technology transfers to SMEs, plus coordination actions.
