Enquadramento

Resources in Earth are limited. Energy is costly and for sure resources available are bounded! This proposal addresses mobile networking issues towards a greener communications world.

The emerging era of Next Generation Networks (NGN) that is being lead by 4G systems has as main objective the creation of high-speed wireless technologies, which will grant better performance and optimize the communication with IP-based core systems - the Internet. The optimization of 4G systems including Long Term Evolution (LTE), WiMAX, or Evolved High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA+) together with the widely used wireless technology IEEE 802.11 (WiFi), provides connectivity to global wireless communication systems that have different capabilities and costs. The NGN heterogeneity encompasses new challenges regarding the devices’ singular moving speeds, mobility patterns, and variety of radio interfaces. Nonetheless, another important parameter that has to be contemplated is the device’s energy consumption. In fact, the energy consumption becomes an important end-user Quality of Experience (QoE) parameter, because end-users aim to maximize the device battery life.

Objetivo

The main objective of this project is to contribute to green communication systems, where the user aims at reducing energy consumption while achieving a good quality of experience when using multimedia applications over IEEE 802.11 networks (WiFi).

In a first phase, the applicant will be introduced, through the analysis of the current state-of-the-art, to the most important concepts and tools concerning green networking, energy saving mechanisms and quality of experience of multimedia applications in wireless networks. This analysis will be focused in the most important algorithms and techniques regarding power saving techniques in IEEE 802.11 networks.

The main goal of this work is to develop techniques that are able to reduce energy consumption while keeping the quality of experience of the end-users assessing multimedia applications at acceptable levels.

The work will start with measurements on Android mobile devices, followed be the implementation on a network simulator (OMNeT++), with the possibility, depending on applicant performance, to use a real testbed to validate the attained results in the simulation. The LCT testbed includes a digitial multimeter (to measure energy consumption) and Android mobile phones to be used as mobile clients.
