Enquadramento
Several "Play Theory" social experiments and other Alternate Reality Games have revealed that human behavior can be channeled to a better experience though invitations to play. It is our purpose in this project to explore the realm of possibility opened when we consider game design in the context of augmented reality through mobile technologies.
In this project we want to continue previous work on the design of a Pervasive Games platform based on augmented reality techniques that use mobile devices (smart phones, pods or pads), QR tagging, positioning and orientation, together with other contextual services (time of day, weather, temperature, social vicinity, ongoing activities, etc.) to enable quick design and deployment of game play in real space.
The mobile device can become a metamorphic object assuming functions such as of a "prompt", a "tricorder", a "magnifying glass", a "time machine", a "telescope", an "astrolabe", a "papyrus", by overloading any virtual object or interface relevant for gameplay.
Current architecture under development provides a mobile interface (on Android or iPhone) that enables game exploration in open contexts, coupled with an online service for game editing and management of shared game context, as well as the end-user annotation and extension with other contextually relevant proposals and links.
Objetivo
This project follows a Design Research approach, and will aim at the design and proof of concept prototype development of an Augmented Reality Game test case in the context of a research cooperation between Instituto Pedro Nunes and PT Inovação.
This development with take advantage of the preexisting technical service infrastructure to enable rapid prototyping of new game interfaces while taking advantage of the already existing Android-based prototypes and multiplayer service infrastructure. Project focus will be on its extension and adaptation to support the purposefully designed gamification case study planned.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
A1. (M1 - M2) State of the art research - research and document the relevant SoA, publications and software review in mobile touch interfaces and augmented reality techniques on mobile devices;
A2. (M3 - M4) Game Design - initial game design proposal of gameplay for the proposed case study, including interaction model and user interface
A2. (M3 - M4) Detailed Design Proposal - Detailed characterization of the state of the art and problem to be solved stating specific goals and requirements, assumptions and milestones for the rest of the project;
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2
A4. (M5 - M10) Prototyping - implementation and testing of a working prototype, tunning or corrections based on evaluation results
A5. (M9) Evaluation - definition of evaluation criteria and method, performance or evaluation and analysis of results
A6. (M10 - M11) Statement of Learning - production of paper/thesis with process report and reflection on knowledge production
Condições
The project will be realized mostly at our CISUC lab and requires pre-selection of the candidate for a research scholarship to be attributed by IPN.
Observações
The student will be actively involved in the game design process, making the prior frequency of EDJ a preferential factor.
