Enquadramento
The fitness function has a deep effect on the selection and survival process. In optimization problems the choice of a fitness function may appear to be straightforward.
In nature, more specifically, in species that resort to sexual reproduction, individuals chose their own mating partners. Most often than not, the selection of the mating partners is influenced by a wide variety of factors that, at least apparently, are not directly linked with survival ability. Paradise birds and peacocks are well-known striking examples of runaway sexual selection. They are, however, far from being the only examples. In nature individuals are unable to determine the survival ability of a potential mate, must make an "educated guess" and try to chose the mate that is most advantageous.
In fact, individuals may have an advantage in choosing mating partners in accordance to criteria other than fitness. For instance, an individual that chooses its mates in accordance to their genetic compatibility may gain an evolutionary advantage.
