Enquadramento
The challenge of expressing the abstract, emotional, and cultural qualities of music has motivated artists and designers through many artistic movements and has led to many innovative works. Visual Music, experimental cinema, computational creativity and much of graphic design history have all been greatly inspired by the visual communication of music. This project proposes combining interaction design with Visual Music in such a way as to create an installation that invites creative participation from the audience, who may take an active role in creating images and sounds in a social and participative experience.
Objetivo
The project aims to develop an interactive installation which will use either the Soundscapes4DEI or FeedNPlay equipment and will provide stimulating and entertaining experience for participants that interprets and/or creates music and visuals though physical movement and behaviour. Being experimental in nature, the objective is to create a series of prototypes both in desktop versions and more elaborate versions that take advantage of the technology mentioned above. The main project could be supported by the development of a laptop or mobile app that allows for a more low fidelity set up which can be shared with a wider audience.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
Literature review and state of the art in the areas of computational creativity linked to music; visual music; computer music, digital installations and media art;
Planning and prototype of the installation using a desktop set up;
Preparation of the presentation of work for the intermediate defence.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2
Completion of the computational system;
Planning and prototype of the installation to use either Soundscapes4DEI or FeedNPlay;
Testing of prototype installation with voluntary users;
Final adjustments and production of the installation;
Conclusion of the written thesis.
Condições
The student must have an interest in contempory arte, digital art, media art and related areas. A capacity to work with programming is important. Does not need to have formal musical training, but some ability to compose music, whether digitally or with conventional instruments would be an advantage.
Observações
Proposal developed in collaboration with Mariana Seiça.
