PaJourVis - Exploring patient journeys visualisations in healthcare
Local do Estágio
Rua Alfredo Allen 455/461, 4200-135 Porto, Portugal
Enquadramento
Background:
The scientific literature offers a diversity of visualisations for mapping patient experiences. While patient journeys were initially imported from Service Design, based on customer journey maps, alternative diagrams were developed to visualise the experience of patients while navigating healthcare services. Existing visualisations go from visual diagrams of patient flows and workflows to narratives that describe patients’ experiences and feelings, and serve a number of purposes.
The student will review alternative visualisations of patient experiences, mapping out different journey maps, providing an overview of their advantages and inconveniences, as well as important aspects to consider when mapping a comprehensive patient journey.
Besides collecting varied visualisations of patient experiences, the candidate will create diagrams for a specific care pathway – the surgery of patients with Musculoskeletal Conditions (MSK). Project SmILE has been conducting fieldwork with patients, healthcare professionals, and other relevant stakeholders on the bone implant surgery performed on patients with MSK. The candidate will be able to access this fieldwork data and test the different patient journey alternatives, to further reflect on the potential of each visualisation type.
Innovative aspects:
The exploration of diverse forms of patient journey mapping can help understand what works best in each context, enabling an effective and efficient application of the method towards more complete results and feasible recommendations.
The study will result in a series of journey map prototypes illustrating patient experiences and components, with design-based recommendations for future healthcare communication practices.
Objetivo
Goals:
The primary goal is to identify which forms of journey map design most effectively communicate healthcare pathways’ complexity and emotional experience, using the case study of MSK care and surgery.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
Workplan:
